My Father, the Hitman

Doc Dolan was connected to the JFK assassination and some of Benny Binion’s bloodier work. When I was a kid, he pulled a con on me that I’m still struggling to understand.

Wow, I can not imagine having a father like him! Kudos to the author all around. Reading this will blow your mind. Because mine definitely was #mindblown. It ends like this…

I’ve wandered for years in the mirror palace of my father’s life, always driven by the idea that I’d eventually arrive at the final truth, and here it was sitting in plain sight: everyone in his life was a mark, with something in his or her heart that made him or her vulnerable to his con. Maybe it wasn’t larceny or greed. Maybe it was the desire to love and be loved. And maybe the only way he could show love was through a con.

I realize now that he groomed me from childhood. I was his perfect mark—and still am. I’ve found ancient yellow pads in my student papers from 50 years ago bearing the first paragraphs of my attempts to write this story. I see in them the beginnings of how I chose my profession, and sometimes I fear that I, too, am a confidence man, selling the proposition that hours of conversation with me will change a life.

I might be the only buyer there ever was for the counterfeit counterfeiting machine, its first and best customer. I openly admit I bought the con, and I knew it was the only way to be close to Doc. For all the trouble it has caused me, all the PTSD, the night terrors in childhood, the harassment by the FBI—all of it—I have no regrets.

Because I am still his mark. As I type these lines, I am still searching to understand him. And the search will go on.

The Girl In The Picture

A sketch artist and a grieving mother set out to solve a cold case. The more they dug, the more terrifying the truth became.

This is one of those mystery stories that once you start you can not wait to get to the end to find out what happened! A 14 year old girl disappears. The search goes on for years. Kudos to the online crime sleuths who do not give up to provide closure to families all on their own time. I am not going to spoil it further…

Ocean Depth Animation

This is, by far, the best ocean depth animation ever created imho, wow!

Progress

Well, this is fun and we can use some mindless fun after the first two mind bending stories today! Ever wondered how long we have until the next _____? Well, click to find out…

A few for entertainment:

Only 26 days left until the next Full Moon.

Only 39 years until Halley’s comet returns

Only 179 years left until Chernobyl is safe again

  1. Silver! For the Pacific North West! Some good reading for these stormy days! Thank you! Oh, I saw that picture of father and son on FB yesterday as well and it is so both sad and joyful. Definitely gets me in the feels!

  2. Good morning George!

Today’s science news: we’ve known for a while that toxoplasma, a feline parasite, causes rats to alter their behavior and take more risks, thereby helping the parasite into cats. New paper: human students infected with toxoplasmosis are 180% more likely to start ventures. Infected founders have 8% more revenue.

I can’t help but wonder how many credit card bloggers are infected?

    1. Looking at the how many blogs are no longer active, there must be a cure.

I remember the good old days of genetic sequencing of large populations. Some Brits were hoping to identify aggressive German genes!
I thought The Chosen One was struggling in their 1-6 loss against Bodø. And then I saw ManU against Liverpool. 0-5 could easily have been 0-10. I’ve never seen so much money spent on a team without a game plan.
And, “The Facebook whistleblower says she doesn’t need financial support because she bought “crypto at the right time.” And that’s how you become financially independent this decade.

  3. Had a client pass away over the weekend so I am a little busy. I will blog again when I can…

The investing environment out there is getting even more insane smh.

    1. Actually, it is Marriott first lol.

      Tweeted this am:

Gave up on Marriott Bonvoy a few years ago. Killing all award charts today is a feature of the program. But let me morph into a “travel” blogger:
“AMAZING Marriott travel rewards cards with HUGE bonuses, BEST OFFERS EVER, HURRRY!”
YOU are being SOLD & treated like a piece of meat

      1. Guess I need to find some use for a decent sized stash ASAP. I’m surprised to see some modicum of positivity around some high end properties being potentially bookable at lower points in off season. I feel like we have a lot of evidence that shifts to revenue-based points amounts is never a win.

        1. They need to keep readers in the game of getting more cards to stay for free….thing is, you will need a lot more cards for that in the future for that. There are a lot of suckers out there as we know…And on it goes…
