My Top 10 Personal Finance Books

Another Mark: I can’t believe none of Jim Cramerโ€™s books made the list :-)

TBB: I was asked about personal finance for educational purposes. Not for entertainment purposes :-)

RAMSEY: You left off โ€œThe Ramsey Affectโ€ by C. Ramseyโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆWhat is the Ramsey affect you ask, it is a sure fire, 100% proven accurate method for buying stocks! How does โ€œThe Ramsey Affectโ€ work, you ask. Simple, whatever stock I sell, no matter how long I have suffered with itโ€ฆwhenever I sell it, you should buy it! Itโ€™s gonna go straight up immediately. Can you tell what stock The Ramsey Effect indicates is a buy? Yea sure. I just sold GE this week after having this dog in my margin account since 1983. Buy Buy Buy!ย  [TBB Management Note: Please do not listen to anything you read here, TBB is not liable for any losses you may incur. Past performance is not indicative of intelligence or lack thereof lol. And for your well being, never take any stock tips from anyone. And stay away from your mother in law, admit you never liked her anywayย  ๐Ÿ™‚ ]

f/a RAMSEY: As a former F/A here is some advice for folks sending kids out on a trip by themselves. #1 donโ€™t do it, buy a ticket go with them and then drop them off. #2 If leaving a kid off to fly alone, donโ€™t leave the freaking airport until the plane lifts off. Cannot tell how many times flight cancels or is massively delayed and parent already split. #3 Be sure person picking them up does not get drunk at the bar and not show up for the flight, happens more than you can imagine. We had 11 parent no shows flying into Anchorage one summer, how many kids went home with an agent for the night, many. This station has many dysfunctional exmarriage situations and frankly scary problem ed people. #4 Send the kid out 1st departure of the day, not last. How many times did we divert or go non routine with a UNAC (kid) onboard and one of the f/aโ€™s has to bring the kid to her hotel room for the night, happened often. #5 It is bad for the kids self esteem to fly alone, as kids are shuttled between exโ€™s every summer, I spent countless hours trying to cheer up despondent kids going to a destination they do not want to.ย  [Great advice, thanks!]

TBB: I should have stayed ๐Ÿ™‚ย  A tweet of mine: “I want to stay in Brazil really! Viva La Grecia…and Brazil too!

Anonymous: At a press conference:

Ronaldo: God sent me to earth to show people how to play football.

At a press conference next day:

Messi: I donโ€™t remember sending anyone.

RAMSEY: Buzz is there any truth to the rumor that DansDeals is changing itโ€™s name to DansAmazingAmazonDiaperDeals?

Dan (of DansDeals): Itโ€™s actually going to be a coordinated effort that will launch when Brian becomes TheCreditCardGuy, Ben changes to OneCreditCardAtATime, Daraius launches MillionCreditCardSecrets, and George switches over to CreditCardBloggerBuzz.

TBB: I like it ๐Ÿ™‚

Laid by James: DOs long predate ingyโ€™s involvement. The 1999 Party in Paradise was a DO.

See http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/communitybuzz/480017-whats-flyertalk-do.html

MilesAbound: See you in Phoenix (for the #WestCoastDO)! Most of the other โ€œDOโ€™sโ€ are commercial operations. As someone involved with planning these I can assure you these are done with no intention of commercialism. While the other may claim they are not for profit, they offer up big sponsorship ops and a chance to push credit card sign ups. What we are doing is a much better formula. [TBB endorses the Saverocity held DOs and FlyerTalk small no fee DOs. I do not recommend the FTU and (especially) the Chicago Seminars…you will feel like a Tool. “Don’t Be a Tool!”

TBB: Germans would not be as kind towards them (Brazilians in the World Cup)ย  ;-)ย ย  [Nailed it! ]

Oliver2002: Its all about visitors, pageviews, average retention and ads. As a blogger you post a bit of controversy once in a while to get people excited, they comment about and tell others (see above), then people step in to comment about comments, and you lean back and watch the show and appreciate the numbers. Really smart ones step into the comments and add a bit of fuel to the fire if things die down.ย ย  [Armed gunmen stormed an Air Canada plane….yeah….aha…I get it now ๐Ÿ˜‰ ]

Steve: If Saverocityโ€™s DO was able to sell out in hours, while the Seminars and FTU which have every big-box blogger need to endlessly hype the event just to get across the finish line, there is hope yet for our community.ย  [ Almost all of the blogs in the Ignore list will be in Chicago, yikes!]

The common man:ย  Stay tuned for Luckyโ€™s next post โ€“ โ€œWhat card do I keep in the secret compartment in my boxer shorts?โ€

โ€œI wear my boxer shorts everywhere I go, and that is where I keep the one card that I absolutely definitely need to have on a second-to-second basis and that I cannot survive without. Not only does this card offer lucrative everyday spending opportunities, but since it is made of metal and is heavier than the usual card, it provides an appropriate resting place for my privates. Not to mention the resulting bulge does not go unnoticed ifyouknowwhatImeanโ€ฆof course, I am referring here to the Chase Sapphire Preferred Visa card โ€ฆโ€

Cue Garyโ€™s postโ€ฆโ€Lucky whispered in my ear that he carries around the Chase Sapphire Preferred card in his underpants. Why stick to 1 card when you can fit multiple cards in there? Here are the top 5 non-stick, non-chafing credit cards that I carry around in my secret compartmentโ€ฆโ€

TBB: I tweeted this recently: Coming soon: Dropped my wallet in the trash. Which credit cards in my wallet smelled the worst, rated from 1 to 10.

Brian Cohen: Which credit cards have the roundest corners for maximum comfort?

Smith: Iโ€™m a little late to the comments, but I agree about there not being much in the points/miles game these days. I see 2 diverging areas here: credit cards and their incessant pumping by blogs; and manufactured spend and its rabid secrecy.

If you think about the average person (even the average miles collector), that person probably isnโ€™t looking to spend a ton of time learning about how to net extra miles on existing credit cards. CC bonuses have been good so they probably care more about maximizing that, which doesnโ€™t take much time or investment and has a fairly good payoff. On the other hand, MS takes a lot of time and devotion. Even if you know of good opportunities, thereโ€™s a good amount of time involved in executing on those opportunities. I got fairly big into it, but frankly, I no longer care enough to invest much time outside of some of the easier options or to hit a minimum spend. I prefer to spend my time focusing on family and work that I enjoy than trying to drive around town to make it worthwhile.

I think for those 2 reasons, you see the content you do on blogs. This is a natural outcome of the bifurcation of โ€œopportunitiesโ€ to lower the cost of travel. Most people who prefer to spend their time differently are going to gravitate toward the CCs and essentially maximize their benefit/time ratio.

Yanni: Has anyone seen my panflute?

Zamfir, Master of the Pan Flute: I used it for that โ€œKill Billโ€ song. Keep forgetting to bring it back, sorry.

TBB:ย  Hey Yanni, you show up here at the 2.00 mark with the Greek Gods discussing the Greek Economy: https://screen.yahoo.com/greek-gods-000000517.html

Ramsey: Buzz I do not know what possessed me (boredom) but I looked at MMS today and he is giving out tips on how to get money for your cab fare by returning stray airport luggage assist carts to get back a quarter. Next he will be giving tips on where to look for bottles and cans for the return $. Hey MMS leave those carts for the homeless and down and out. I just wish he had a picture of Emily returning a cart and holding up her quarter for the camera.

    1. I think your post was great by the way. I just thought it was unnecessarily giving attention to this blogger who obviously has no awareness of what he “blogs” about and how much it sucks. They need to be ignored ๐Ÿ™‚

I think he thinks you are now one of the angries lol

  1. TBB, don’t encourage the man behind the curtain. He’s a fellow Brooklynite, and will take your encouragement to write more quips from his home neighborhood of Canarsie.

By posting, it means I’ll have to remember to come back to TBB to read the witty responses from both of you. ๐Ÿ˜‰
