The intention is still to stay away from blogging in the weekends. Well, old habits die hard so I had to post this past Saturday with a great link about our favorite bank and the now infamous 5/24 rule. A must read for all newbies and probably you too!

Your personal finance fix: We Can’t Direct the Wind, But We Can Adjust Our Sails. Some wonderful advice here, my favorite examples are:

  • We cannot control being laid off from our jobs for reasons we had nothing to do with. We can control having an emergency fund in place with one year’s salary stashed away.
  • We cannot control the fact that markets do not have positive returns every year. We can control our savings rate, tax management and investment costs to help smooth the ride.
  • We cannot control the fact that most private sector jobs no longer offer a pension. We can control contributing enough to our 401(k) plans to, at the very least, qualify for an employer match.
  • We cannot control the fact that too many so-called “financial advisors” are nothing more than glorified used car salesmen pitching the product of the month. We can control choosing a real financial advisor; a fee-only fiduciary who is legally bound to look out for our best interests.
  • We cannot control the likely possibility we will never become a billionaires. We can control our level of happiness by valuing experiences with our family and friends and doing things for others.

Frequent Miler, after losing Julian to The Points Guy, now is losing Shawn too. When it rains, it pours; bad break losing two good people back to back! So he is looking for someone to come aboard full time. If only all bloggers had this site’s affiliate linking policy the world would be a better place and not have the pumping machine Titans be sought after as “experts” #myass. I don’t want to get into discussing The Hobby here you guys 🙂

This site does NOT do weekly digest posts, I see them as a cop out to regular readers. But I hear they are wonderful for SEO stuff, Alexa rankings etc. Maybe one day I should start paying attention to these things…

I am having lots of fun at the 2017 North American International Auto Show in Detroit attending some private events for Amex Platinum card holders with my wife.   5. I was thinking, since Trump was elected, should I just watch the world burn an apply for the Chase Sapphire Reserve through The Points Guy? I decided no and applied through your links. I say first!

  6. I already have a cat 5 week I’ve extended twice, currently through December of this year. I’m considering jumping on it before it dies, but haven’t decided where to put the miles. My travel partner has the companion pass and plentiful points there, so I don’t need that. My top choice is currently Alaska miles. Anyone have thoughts or recommendations?

    I doubt it’s a bad deal for Marriott. I suspect few hobbyists will end up staying at a Marriott hotel for 7 days.

    1. I think there was a spike in these redemptions. When spikes happen, management notices. And they eventually come around to fix things that cost real money…#hopeIamwrong

    1. Never flown Frontier yet…Well I flew Spirit for the first time in 2016. Maybe I ll fly Frontier in 2017. Maybe I start a “fly one new airline every year” and make a post about it and…deduct the cost 🙂

  9. I applied with your link on Sat, got the message you noted with the automated phone line currently giving me the “30 days” message. Keeping my fingers crossed…

    1. Many do not have the flexibility. You have to find a hotel with 7 nights of standard room award availability. Some don’t get excited about staying 7 nights at Marriott’s category 1-5 hotels. I have never stayed at one property for more than 5 days.

      1. I have a hard time staying 3 nights, let alone 7. My best plan of attack is splitting the package 3:4 with someone else.

          1. I just get impatient. I’m not quite at rapid travel chai speed, but I hate the idea of staying in one place for more than a couple days.

  11. As if Mother Merrill cares if you poach a client or two LOL. Good for you taking someone from the BigDog but that constant asset grab by Mother is unstoppable.

    1. U never hear any going back to ML after they leave them!
      So, they have been losing to us for years…but the y just keep expanding the market. Just like bloggers keep pumping and expanding the newbie market…ML reps just go off on BofA warm leads, eeer, mean victims 🙂

      1. I dont know who “”us” is but small fish, small pond kinda stuff dude. Great for taking but Mother gets her pound of flesh always. Wait til they get free of BofA. Unleash the Krakken sort of proportions.
